Kankakee County holiday aid event offers help to families in need

Show summary Hide summary

This holiday season three nonprofit groups in Kankakee County are coordinating to simplify aid for families still recovering from spring’s destructive tornado. By combining toy drives, gift programs and bedding assistance into a single distribution, organizers aim to reach more households with fewer barriers.

Collections begin this Thursday, and a consolidated distribution event is scheduled for Dec. 14–16, giving families one location to pick up multiple types of support.

The partnership brings together the local chapters of the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots, The Salvation Army and the volunteer nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Instead of separate giveaways, the groups will run a coordinated “One Stop Shop” to reduce duplication and make access easier for parents and guardians.

Organizers say the joint effort responds to a likely uptick in need after the March 10 tornado damaged homes across the county. Combining resources lets volunteers serve more families efficiently and helps ensure children receive gifts while households that lack beds can register for furniture assistance on site.

What each group is offering and how to get involved

  • Toys for Tots (Kankakee County) — Collecting new, unwrapped toys for children ages 0–17. Donation window: Oct. 1–Nov. 15. Information and drop-off locations: kankakee-il.toysfortots.org.
  • The Salvation Army (N. Harrison Corps) — Running an Angel Tree-style program. Families and donors can sign up from Oct. 6–Dec. 5: salvationarmyusa.org/il/kankakee/n-harrison-corps/angel-tree-kankakee.
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace (Kankakee chapter) — Accepting applications for beds and recruiting volunteers. Apply or volunteer at shpbeds.org/chapter/il-kankakee; families can also register for bed assistance during the Dec. distribution.

These windows give donors and families clear deadlines, but the centralized December distribution is designed to be a one-stop pick-up for approved households.

Kickoff and community events

The toy drive gets an early boost on Sunday, Oct. 11, when the Kankakee County Toys for Tots motorcycle ride opens the campaign at the Kankakee Walmart. Riders are asked to meet in the parking lot at 10 a.m. to load a U-Haul with donated toys.

Anyone can contribute to the truck — you do not need to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists leaving at noon will head to the Bradley American Legion Post 766 for a game-watching gathering, raffles and fundraiser activities.

Bringing the drives together reduces paperwork for families and helps local agencies coordinate volunteer crews, delivery logistics and storage. For households still facing displacement or repair after the tornado, that streamlined approach can make holiday support more accessible.

If you plan to apply for help or donate, check each organization’s site for eligibility details and the latest collection locations before you go. The consolidated distribution on Dec. 14–16 will be the primary opportunity for families to receive combined assistance from all three groups.
