Kankakee County officials approved a fresh round of roof repairs Tuesday to fix storm damage at four public properties, a move officials say keeps county operations running and protects facilities that serve residents. The projects — awarded to two contractors — bring the county’s recovery spending to more than $1.75 million after severe weather hit the area on March 10.
Contracts awarded, work to follow
The county board voted to accept the lowest bids for each roof replacement, selecting Langlois Roofing for three sites and Adler Roofing and Sheet Metal for one. The measures were presented as part of a broader recovery program following the March 10 storms that damaged multiple county buildings and dozens of vehicles.

- Kankakee County Detention Center — 400 E. Merchant St.: awarded to Langlois Roofing for $322,000.
- Kankakee County Annex Building — 470 E. Merchant St.: Langlois Roofing, $165,000.
- Highway Department office and storage — 750 East St.: Langlois Roofing, $272,000.
- Storage building — 142 E. Water St.: Adler Roofing and Sheet Metal, $66,290.
Those four contracts total $825,290, and when combined with previously authorized work the county’s committed replacement budget now stands at $1,755,290. Earlier this year the board had approved about $930,000 in related repairs.
Why this matters
Replacing roofs on municipal buildings is not just a maintenance item: it preserves essential services and can prevent more costly interior damage if left unattended. The detention center and county annex house daily public functions, and the highway department’s facilities are central to road maintenance operations.
County officials said these awards follow competitive bidding and are the next step in restoring infrastructure affected by the spring storm. The repairs will be carried out under the contractors’ awarded contracts; the county has not announced detailed schedules for start or completion dates.
Storm damage on March 10 also affected between 30 and 50 vehicles, according to county reports, illustrating the scale of the event and the urgency of the county’s recovery work.
