A late-night fire in Manteno was limited to an outbuilding after crews arrived quickly, but a downed utility line turned the scene into a serious electrical hazard, officials said. The incident highlights lingering risks when power lines fall in residential areas and why rapid emergency response matters.
The Manteno Fire Protection District reported responding Wednesday night to the 200 block of South Hickory Street after receiving calls about smoke and flames. Firefighters reached the property at 11:12 p.m. and found a detached garage fully involved.

According to a district statement issued Thursday, a downed power line had ignited the garage and created a “significant electrical hazard,” complicating suppression efforts and requiring extra caution from crews on scene.
