The sixth annual Estival Festival returns to Bird Park in Kankakee on Saturday, Sept. 19, promising a daylong celebration of local music, art and community — a reunion with added meaning as the city continues to recover from the March tornado. Organizers say the free, all-ages event will spotlight local talent and provide a space for neighbors to reconnect outdoors.
The festival is organized by the Collaborative Initiative To Revive Kankakee (CIRKA) and runs from noon until 11 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are welcomed to support the ongoing work of local arts programming. This year’s edition keeps a familiar mix — live bands, DJs, food vendors and family-focused activities — while emphasizing community resilience.

Mika, the winner of CIRKA’s Teen Talent Takeover, will open the program, giving one of Kankakee’s emerging performers a prominent slot on the bill. CIRKA leaders have highlighted the Teen Talent Takeover as a deliberate effort to create performance opportunities for younger artists in the county.
Music will come from a main stage and a separate DJ tent, with a roster of DJs presented by House of Brooks. Local personality Lady G (Celia Carr) will serve as the event’s guest MC, guiding the day’s performances and announcements.
The festival includes a substantial family area. The Kids Zone — presented by Kankakee With Kids — is designed so younger attendees can play and create while parents enjoy the rest of the program.

Children’s programming will include family yoga, a family disc golf experience facilitated by KADGA, and hands-on building with Bricks and Minifigs. Additional attractions such as lawn games from Suns Out Games Out, a glow tent, coloring stations and giant-bubble activities are planned, along with a misting station provided to help guests stay cool.
“After what the community has been through, gathering in public and celebrating local creativity feels especially important,” said Ashley Cantrell, the festival’s event producer. Cantrell framed Estival as both a showcase for artists and a moment to acknowledge the strength of neighbors coming together in recovery.
Now in its sixth year, the festival is part of CIRKA’s broader mission to nurture Kankakee’s cultural life through music, visual and performing arts, and community-engaged programming. Organizers describe the event as a way to reinforce the city’s cultural identity while creating regular platforms for artists and makers.
Estival’s loose, daylong format is meant to be accessible: visitors can drop in for a single performance, linger for food and art, or spend the whole afternoon participating in family activities. For many in Kankakee, the festival serves as both a cultural highlight and a sign of normalcy as recovery continues.
The day’s schedule will include staggered performances and activity blocks to let families and neighbors move between stages and the Kids Zone without missing headline acts.
CIRKA operates as a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on arts education, cultural programming and historic preservation in Kankakee County. Estival Festival is one of several initiatives the organization runs to expand opportunities for local artists and audiences.
