As temperatures dip and school routines resume, a Kankakee nonprofit is stepping in to help households prepare for fall without added expense. Still I Rise will distribute clothing, shoes and basic household supplies at a one-hour giveaway this Saturday, offering immediate relief to families facing tight budgets.
The event runs from 1 to 2 p.m. at the RE/MAX office, 297 S. Schuyler Ave., at the corner of Schuyler and Station streets in Kankakee. Organizers say items are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and recipients must be present to collect goods.

Volunteers will hand out a range of donated items to help families transition into the new season. All items are provided at no cost.

- Clothing for men, women, children and infants
- Footwear
- Hygiene and personal-care products
- Health and beauty supplies
- Household essentials
Everything will be free, with supplies limited. Those planning to attend are advised to arrive early; once stock is gone, organizers say no replacements will be available that day.
“We want community members to know support is available as they prepare for the season ahead,” said Still I Rise Executive Director Tocarra Eldridge in a recent statement, underscoring the group’s effort to meet immediate needs.
Part of a wider relief effort
The giveaway is one element of Still I Rise’s Wellness/Relief Program, which focuses on delivering practical aid to people experiencing financial strain or other hardships. The program pairs in‑person distribution events with outreach intended to help stabilize families.
Still I Rise is accepting donations of new or gently used clothing, household items and personal-care products to support future distributions. Donations enable the organization to maintain a steady supply for outreach activities throughout the year.
For residents, the event is an opportunity to pick up essential items without cost and to connect with a local charity offering continuing assistance. For the broader community, these distributions reduce immediate pressure on household budgets as the season changes.
